Dentistry Career

The University of Florida College of Dentistry was established in 1972 and is the only dental school that is publicly-funded in the state. The college’s strategic plan is underpinned by five key aims: to develop and sustain learner-centered education, provide excellent oral health care grounded in evidence, and to support and advance pre-eminent basic, clinical, translational, and population-based research are the first three goals. The final two are to upgrade teaching, research, and clinical space/infrastructure and ensure the availability of resources to support existing and future programs, and to enhance and maintain a supportive and humanistic environment.

The Hinman Student Research Symposium celebrated its 28th anniversary when it was held on November 10th – 12th in 2023. The symposium is a national meeting that features poster and oral presentations of research studies by dental students and graduate trainees from North American and Canadian dental schools. The goal of the event is to help enhance and maintain the quality of dental education and research in the US by encouraging dental school students, faculty members, and graduate trainees to undertake research to improve oral health around the world.

The Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree and The Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree are, in fact, the same qualification. While determining which degree is awarded is a decision made by the university, both use the same curriculum requirements. Both degrees are viewed equally by specialty residency programs, and both enjoy the same earnings potential.

FreeD.O.M. Clinic USA

The FreeD.O.M. Clinic USA provides free dental, optical, and medical care for under-insured and uninsured individuals. The organization also offers free health education, including diabetes counseling and hypertension counseling, and provides information on nutrition and fitness. In terms of dental care, examinations, x-rays, fillings, extractions, and oral hygiene education are offered as needed. In October 2021, the clinic’s oral health team provided free dental care for 72 children and adults over a seven-hour period. Doing so set a record for the number of patients treated in a one-day dental care event organized by FreeD.O.M. USA.
